Princesa de Parma Isabella

Photo: Reproduction

Isabella of Parma was a princess of the House of Bourbon-Parma, known for her intelligence and literary work within the context of the European Enlightenment of the 18th century. A granddaughter of Philip V of Spain and Louis XV of France, she became the wife of Archduke Joseph of Austria, the future Emperor Joseph II, securing a prominent position at the courts of Parma, France and Vienna. During her short marriage, Isabella wrote extensively on philosophy, religion, ethics, politics, diplomacy, education and the condition of women, arguing for women’s intellectual equality in meditations and correspondence kept secret during her lifetime. Her Méditations chrétiennes were published posthumously in 1764, and other writings were preserved by biographers. At the Viennese court she became popular, but she also faced personal conflicts: a strict childhood, reproductive health problems and emotional anguish that affected her deeply. Intimate and affectionate relationships, including a close bond with Archduchess Maria Christina, shaped her personal life and influenced public perception of her. Having died young of smallpox, Isabella left an intellectual legacy and a complex image — that of an enlightened princess, reflective writer and tragic figure whose work helps illuminate women’s voices in the Enlightenment.
