Princess Kako of Japan is a member by birth of the Japanese imperial family, the second daughter of Prince Fumihito, Prince Akishino, and Princess Kiko. A granddaughter of Emperor Emeritus Akihito and niece of the current Emperor Naruhito, Kako has regularly taken part in official and ceremonial duties tied to the imperial institution, both in Japan and abroad. A graduate in liberal arts from the International Christian University with additional studies in psychology and the performing arts, she completed an academic exchange in the United Kingdom and a study stay in the United States. Her studies and activities have been directed toward fulfilling public duties, including speeches at educational institutions and participation in sporting and cultural events. Internationally, she is noted for representational missions and state visits; she illustrated this role in 2025 when she made an official visit to Brazil, with an agenda in several cities and institutional meetings that underscored the historical relationship between the two countries. Like other female members of the imperial house, her place in the line of succession is limited by current law, and her official status would change if she were to marry a commoner.
