Maria Luisa of Bourbon-Parma was a princess of Parma and, by marriage, Princess Consort of Bulgaria from 1893 to 1898. Born into the ducal house of Parma, she received a refined education in Europe, spoke several languages and took particular interest in the arts, especially music and literature. Her marriage to Prince Ferdinand of Saxe-Coburg-Koháry was arranged by her father and solemnized in 1893. The union produced four children, among them Boris, who would become Tsar of Bulgaria. The marital relationship was marked by coldness and quarrels, reflecting dynastic and religious tensions—most notably over Boris’s conversion to Orthodoxy. Maria Luisa’s public life included representations at European courts and official travel, such as a well-received visit to Saint Petersburg in 1898. Her health, however, was fragile: she died in Sofia shortly after giving birth to her fourth daughter at the age of 29 and was buried in Plovdiv. Her main legacy was her descendants, who consolidated the Bulgarian-Saxon dynasty and had a direct impact on the royal succession through Boris III.
