Princess Elizabeth of the United Kingdom was a princess of the House of Hanover, daughter of King George III and Queen Charlotte. Raised at court, she became notable not only for her place in the line of succession but for her intellectual and artistic work: she distinguished herself as an engraver, painter and illustrator, producing series such as The Birth and the Triumph of Cupid and the suite The Progress of Genius, as well as murals and architectural designs for royal residences. During her youth she lived under circumstances marked by her father's illnesses and a long period of single life, during which she devoted time to charitable works and to patronage of literary figures. In 1818 she married Frederick of Hesse‑Homburg; the marriage, although not driven by passion, proved happy and allowed her to consolidate cultural activities at the Homburg court. Throughout her life she maintained a prolific artistic and literary output, even writing and illustrating the biography of an ancestor. After her husband's death she lived in her own palace in Hanover and died while traveling in Europe in 1840, leaving a legacy as a patron, artist and collector of books and decorative designs.
