Frederick Charles Nicholas of Prussia was a 19th‑century Prussian prince and military officer, grandson of King Frederick William III and nephew of two monarchs. Raised under a military tutelage, he completed his studies at the University of Bonn and began his career in the 1848 campaigns, where he served as a captain and was wounded in action. In the following years he rose rapidly through the ranks, becoming colonel, major‑general and lieutenant. As a commander he distinguished himself in the wars of German unification. In 1864 he led contingents in the Second Schleswig War; in the Austro‑Prussian War he commanded the First Army at Königgrätz, holding back the Austrian advance until the intervention of the Prussian Second Army. In the Franco‑Prussian War he commanded the Second Army, taking part in battles such as Spicheren and Gravelotte and in the siege of Metz, and later in the Loire operations, including Orléans and Le Mans. After the conflicts he received high honors, became inspector‑general of the Prussian forces and was awarded an honorary rank of field marshal by foreign allies. Married to Princess Marie Anne of Anhalt‑Dessau, he left descendants connected to several European houses.
