Sigismund of Prussia (August Wilhelm Viktor Karl Heinrich Sigismund) was a member of the German high nobility, born into the Hohenzollern dynasty and a nephew of Kaiser Wilhelm II. As the second son of Prince Henry of Prussia and Princess Irene of Hesse and by Rhine, his life is set within the context of early 20th‑century European aristocracy and the political changes that affected royal families after World War I. In 1919 he married Princess Charlotte of Saxe‑Altenburg; the marriage produced two children, Barbara and Alfred, and maintained ties with other noble houses in Germany. His family story illustrates the dynastic networks that persisted, albeit with reduced privilege, through the interwar years. In 1927 he moved with his family to Costa Rica, where he purchased land and planned to develop commercial agriculture, including bananas and coffee—an example of defeated nobility seeking new means of support outside Europe. Sigismund died in Puntarenas in 1978, leaving a legacy defined by adaptation to life beyond Europe’s political stage.
