Prince of the House of Saxe-Weimar-Eisenach, Wilhelm Karl Bernhard Hermann was a prominent member of the German high nobility in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The eldest son of Prince Hermann and Princess Augusta of Württemberg, he held a notable place in the line of succession while the grand duke remained a widower, at one point making him heir presumptive. He received several royal decorations, including the Grand Cross of the White Falcon and the Grand Cross of the Ernestine House Order.
Wilhelm’s life was marked by financial difficulties and conflicts with the ducal head. He was once forced to live outside Weimar by order of the grand duke and, in his youth, spent some time working in the United States in various jobs before returning to Germany. His conduct caused displeasure within the ruling family, which, in matters related to succession and unsuitable marriages, imposed restrictions and granted pensions.
Married to Princess Gerta of Isenburg-Büdingen, he had three children, among them Prince Hermann and Prince Albert Wilhelm, who was killed in action during the First World War. Wilhelm’s biography reflects both the privileges and the internal strains of German princely houses during the turn of the century, tied to the complex dynamics of succession and the personal consequences of scandals and financial constraints.
