Prince Francis of Teck was a member of the British aristocracy and the younger brother of Queen Mary, wife of King George V. He received a military education at Wellington, Cheltenham and Sandhurst, serving with the lance units, the Royal Rifle Corps and the Royal Dragoons, rising to the rank of major before his retirement in 1902. He took part in campaigns in the Sudan and the South African War, receiving military decorations and mentions in dispatches.
Known in society for his troubled personal life and gambling habits, Francis never married and maintained extramarital relationships that later provoked controversy. At his death he left a significant portion of his estate — including Teck family jewelry — to a mistress, a fact that prompted family negotiations and the repurchase of pieces by his sister, the then Queen Mary.
He died in 1910 of complications from an infection and was buried at Frogmore. His will, originally sealed to protect the royal family's reputation, was later reviewed and published many years afterwards, fueling debate about privacy and inheritance among members of the royal family.
