Maria Cristina Amélia Teresa of Naples and Sicily was a Princess of the Two Sicilies and, by marriage, Queen Consort of Sardinia as the wife of Charles Felix of Savoy. A daughter of Ferdinand I of the Two Sicilies and Maria Carolina of Austria, she belonged to a dynastic line connected to the European courts of the late 18th and early 19th centuries. She married in 1807 to Prince Charles Felix, then Duke of Genoa; she became queen consort when her husband acceded to the throne in 1821. The childless couple were noted patrons of the arts and for their interventions in royal residences such as the Castle of Agliè and the Villa Rufinella in Frascati. Maria Cristina supported archaeological initiatives: in 1825 she funded excavations led by Luigi Biondi that led to the discovery of Tusculum, and later commissioned Luigi Canina for work on the theatre of Tusculum, with ancient pieces sent to the collection at Agliè. Widowed in 1831, she lived between Turin, Naples, Agliè and Frascati until her death in 1849. Her legacy is associated with the artistic and archaeological patronage of the Savoy court and with the enrichment of the Piedmontese royal collections; she was interred in the Basilica of Superga in Turin.
