Queen Consort of Saxony Maria Theresa

Photo: Reproduction

Archduchess of Austria and princess of Tuscany by birth, Maria Theresa Josepha Charlotte Joanna of Austria became known in history as Queen Consort of Saxony when she married Prince Anthony in 1787. The daughter of Grand Duke Peter Leopold of Tuscany (the future Emperor Leopold II) and Maria Luisa of Spain, she belonged to the Habsburg dynasty and received an education shaped by family life and a simpler way of living than the courtly customs common at the time. Described as reserved and devoted to domestic life, Maria Theresa took part in discreet political duties: she assisted her father in arranging the meeting that produced the Declaration of Pillnitz (1791), a document of significance for the European monarchies in response to the French Revolution. Her life was disrupted by the Napoleonic wars; the family fled to Prague in 1806 and did not return until 1813. Her marriage to Anthony was shadowed by personal tragedy: their four children died in childhood. Maria Theresa held the title Queen of Saxony for only a few months in 1827, shortly before her death in Leipzig. She is remembered as a member of the dynastic network that forged political ties among European courts during a period of intense change.
