R. Kelly (Robert Sylvester Kelly) is an American singer, songwriter and record producer whose work had a major commercial impact in the 1990s and 2000s. As writer and performer of hits such as “I Believe I Can Fly,” “Bump n’ Grind” and “Ignition (Remix),” he released 18 studio albums and worked as a producer and songwriter for internationally known artists. He received major awards, including Grammys for “I Believe I Can Fly,” and was recognized for sales that placed him among the most commercially successful artists in modern R&B.
His artistic career included ambitious experiments such as the Trapped in the Closet series, and collaborations with figures like Michael Jackson, Céline Dion and Janet Jackson, as well as contributions to soundtracks and events such as the Olympics and the 2010 World Cup. At the same time, his public image and legacy were deeply affected by allegations of sexual abuse dating back to the 1990s, which led to investigations, trials and criminal convictions beginning in 2019.
