Rachida Dati is a French politician and jurist whose public career spans the judiciary, ministerial offices, and service in the European Parliament. Trained in economics and law, she joined the judiciary and, once in politics, became an adviser to Nicolas Sarkozy, rising to prominence when appointed Minister of Justice in 2007 — the first person of North African origin to head a sovereign ministry in France. Her reform of the judicial system provoked controversy among legal professionals but was described by the Cour des comptes as ambitious. Elected to the European Parliament (2009–2019), Dati sat with the European People’s Party, focusing on issues such as the fight against terrorism, prevention of radicalization, prison conditions, and management of the migration crisis. At the municipal level, she served as mayor of Paris’s 7th arrondissement and leader of the opposition on the Council of Paris, and was a candidate in major local elections in 2020 and 2026. Over the course of her career she has held consulting and advisory roles and faced inquiries and questions about conflicts of interest, as well as personal threats. In 2024 she returned to government as Minister of Culture, a post she held until 2026; her career remains associated with the presence of figures from migration backgrounds in France’s senior republican administration.
