Rafael Sebastián Guillén Vicente is the central figure of the Zapatista movement in southern Mexico, publicly known by several pseudonyms, including Subcomandante Marcos, Subcomandante Galeano and, more recently, Captain Insurgent Marcos. Trained in Philosophy and Letters at UNAM, he worked as a university professor before joining the core that would give rise to the Zapatista Army of National Liberation (EZLN) in the jungles of Chiapas. He became the movement’s spokesperson and strategist during the 1994 uprising, playing a decisive role in subsequent negotiations and political coordination.
Recognizable by his mask, pipe and literary prose, Guillén became a public symbol of the Zapatista struggle, directing campaigns, marches and mobilizations that sought national and international visibility for indigenous rights and critiques of neoliberalism. His written output — communiqués, short stories, essays and literary pieces — broadened the movement’s reach and has been translated into several languages.
Over decades, his work ranged from the initial military strategy to the construction of political and symbolic repertoires that influenced social networks, intellectuals and social movements across Latin America. His legacy lies both in the persistence of the EZLN and in the spread of an anti‑capitalist critique centered on autonomy and indigenous rights.
