Rajesh Khanna was an Indian actor, film producer and politician, widely regarded as the first major star of Hindi cinema. He broke through commercially in the late 1960s and rose to “superstar” status after the huge success of Aradhana (1969) and a string of films that made him the dominant box-office figure in the early 1970s. His artistic career combined popular hits with critical acclaim: films such as Anand and Sachaa Jhutha earned him Best Actor awards, demonstrating a range that spanned romantic melodrama to social drama. Over his career he won multiple Filmfare Awards and was posthumously awarded the civilian honor Padma Bhushan. Beyond cinema, Khanna entered politics and served as a member of the Lok Sabha from 1992 to 1996, elected on the Indian National Congress ticket. His cultural influence endures through his filmography—marked by major successes and memorable collaborations—as well as the public image that came to define an era of entertainment in India.
