Ralph David Richardson was one of the leading English actors of the twentieth century, part of the triumvirate that dominated British theatre alongside John Gielgud and Laurence Olivier. Trained in practice with touring companies and at the Birmingham Repertory Theatre, he established himself at the Old Vic in the 1930s and 1940s, where he was prominent in Shakespearean roles and in central parts in both classical and modern plays. As co-director of the Old Vic with Olivier and John Burrell, he led the company on tours in Europe and to New York, and created memorable interpretations of Peer Gynt and Falstaff. After the war he sustained a prolific career in the West End and on tour, appearing in plays such as The Heiress, Home at Seven and Three Sisters, often favoring character roles over the great tragic leads. Alongside his stage work, Richardson had an extensive film career—more than sixty films—including notable appearances in Things to Come, The Fallen Idol, Long Day's Journey into Night and Doctor Zhivago. He received international awards and nominations, including two Academy Award nominations for Best Supporting Actor. Celebrated for a stage presence described as poetic and for personal eccentricities, he left a lasting legacy in British theatre and influenced later generations.
