Simeon Borisov Saxe-Coburg-Gotha, known as Simeon II, was monarch and later a political leader of Bulgaria. The son of Tsar Boris III and Tsarina Joanna of Savoy, he ascended the throne as a child (1943–1946) and became the last Bulgarian tsar before the monarchy was abolished and he went into exile after the 1946 referendum. He spent much of his life abroad — in Egypt, Spain and the United States — where he pursued military and political science studies. With the end of the communist regime, he returned to Bulgaria in 1996 and rebuilt a public presence, legally reclaiming family properties. In 2001 he founded the National Movement Simeon II and won the elections, serving as prime minister from 2001 to 2005. During his government Bulgaria joined NATO (2004) and advanced its rapprochement with the European Union. His career combined a shift from a symbolic dynastic role to active political engagement in the post-communist era, blending property claims with participation in the country’s major euro-Atlantic integration debates.
