Gustaf V (Oscar Gustaf Adolf) was King of Sweden from 1907 until 1950, succeeding Oscar II. The son of the monarch and Princess Sofia of Nassau, he played a central role in the definitive shift to Swedish parliamentarism: although he initially tried to influence political choices — notably during the 1914 crisis that led to the fall of the liberal government — he ultimately accepted, after 1917–1919, the formation of governments based on parliamentary majorities and the establishment of universal and equal suffrage. On the international front, Gustaf V held conservative, anti‑communist and pro‑German positions at crucial moments during both world wars; his most controversial intervention came in World War II, when he pressured the coalition government to accede to German logistical requests to avert a possible invasion. There is no evidence he adhered to fascism, but his stance drew criticism. A public figure with a passion for sport, he presided over the 1912 Olympic Games and led the Swedish sports association before ascending the throne; he played tennis and hunted throughout his life. His long reign left an ambiguous legacy: he consolidated the constitutional monarchy in Sweden and remained popular despite controversies over his personal and political attitudes.
