Louis-Philippe I, known as the “Citizen King” or the “Bourgeois King,” was monarch of the French from 1830 to 1848, a period called the July Monarchy. He ascended after the fall of Charles X following the July Revolution, heading a regime characterized by the political and economic predominance of the property-owning bourgeoisie and by the incorporation of personnel from the Napoleonic era into the administration and the Army.

A son of the Duke of Orléans, whose ambiguous stance during the French Revolution ended in execution, Louis-Philippe had a complex career: from early involvement with revolutionary circles and military service in the campaigns against Austria, to exile and contact with European monarchies during the Napoleonic wars. Reintegrated into political life during the Restoration, he became a notable patron of the liberal opposition and an influencer of contemporary political journalism.

On the throne, his government shifted toward a more conservative profile from about 1840, especially under the influence of François Guizot, prioritizing internal order and restricting electoral reforms. From the 1840s onward, social and economic crises and allegations of corruption eroded his support, leading him to abdicate during the Revolution of 1848 and live in exile in the United Kingdom until his death.

His legacy is ambivalent: he embodied a monarchy aligned with bourgeois interests and moderate stability, but also exemplifies the limits of a regime that failed to respond to the social and political pressures that culminated in the mid-19th-century revolutions.
