Anton I of Saxony (Antônio I) was the Saxon monarch from 1827 to 1836, remembered for a reign defined by stability and moderate reforms that improved living standards in his realm. The son of Elector Frederick Christian, he ascended late to the throne at age 71 with no intention of radical change; his conciliatory manner and religious character earned him the popular nickname “the Gentle.”
During his reign the kingdom moved toward a constitutional monarchy: the unrest following July 1830 led to the appointment of a younger co‑regent and the promulgation of a new constitution in 1831, which established a bicameral parliament and a responsible ministry while preserving royal prerogatives that remained more conservative than those in some contemporary charters.
Anton also supported Saxony’s scientific and technical development: under his government technical schools were founded and initiatives to modernize commerce and industry advanced, efforts reinforced by entry into the Zollverein in 1833. He was also known as a patron of the arts, an amateur musician and bibliophile, leaving the image of a sovereign devoted to letters and the stage.
