Chulalongkorn, known as Rama V and revered as “The Great,” was the fifth monarch of the Chakri dynasty of Siam, reigning from 1868 to 1910. The son of Mongkut, he became known for reforms that transformed the traditional kingdom into a modern state: he reorganized the army, created a centralized administration, and invested in infrastructure such as railways, which connected regions and promoted economic development. One of the most significant social changes of his reign was the gradual abolition of slavery, a measure that profoundly altered labor relations and the country’s social structure. His reformist policies sought to combine internal modernization with preservation of sovereignty in the face of colonial powers, in a regional context marked by European expansion. Despite these reforms, his government faced territorial losses: concessions and border adjustments with France and Britain resulted in the loss of parts of Laos, the return of territories to Cambodia, and the renunciation of claims over Malay states. Chulalongkorn’s legacy endures in the modernization of the Siamese state and the consolidation of the monarchy as a driver of national transformation.
