René Girard was a French-American intellectual whose work spanned comparative literature, anthropology, philosophy, and religious studies. A professor at institutions such as Johns Hopkins and Stanford, he published nearly thirty books in which he linked literary readings with social analysis, and he became a member of the Académie Française in 2005. His academic reputation rests largely on works such as Mensonge Romantique et Vérité Romanesque, La violence et le sacré, and Des choses cachées depuis la fondation du Monde. Girard is best known for Mimetic Theory, which argues that human desire is always an imitation of others’ desires, producing rivalry and violence. From this process, he proposed, arises the scapegoat mechanism: the concentration of violence on an arbitrary victim who, once eliminated, temporarily restores social cohesion and gives rise to religious practices and rituals. His interdisciplinary approach engaged and revisited thinkers such as Freud, Lévi-Strauss, and Marx, influencing disciplines including law, economics, psychology, and religious studies. The founding of the Colloquium on Violence and Religion (COV&R) and subsequent academic projects attest to the enduring relevance and impact of his ideas.
