Richard Erskine Frere Leakey was a paleoanthropologist, conservationist and public figure in Kenya, known both for his scientific contributions and for his leadership of cultural and wildlife protection institutions. The son of Louis and Mary Leakey, he grew up immersed in research settings and expeditions, developing from an early age practical skills in field archaeology and fossil identification that guided him into his own career studying hominids and promoting regional paleontology. Throughout his life he held key positions in Kenyan institutions: he directed the National Museums of Kenya, chaired the Kenya Wildlife Service and founded the NGO WildlifeDirect, coordinating efforts to conserve species and combat the illegal wildlife trade. He also served in government as cabinet secretary and head of the civil service at the end of President Daniel arap Moi’s regime, a post in which he influenced public policies related to natural heritage. Leakey co‑founded the Turkana Basin Institute in academic partnership with Stony Brook University, where he taught anthropology and chaired the institute until his death. His legacy combines scientific discoveries in the Rift Valley with an institutional career focused on protecting Kenya’s paleontological heritage and its wildlife.
