Richard Georg Strauss was a German composer and conductor, a key figure between late Romanticism and early 20th‑century music. Known for his work as a conductor at major houses in Germany, Austria and abroad, he also established himself as a prolific creator of operas, symphonic poems and lieder. His best‑known works include Der Rosenkavalier, Salomé, Vier letzte Lieder and the symphonic poem Also sprach Zarathustra, whose opening theme became widely popular. His artistic partnership with librettist Hugo von Hofmannsthal marked a decisive phase, guiding Strauss toward an operatic output of great dramatic and psychological refinement, often centered on complex female characters. Musically he reconciled the legacies of Wagner and Mozart with timbral and harmonic innovations, alternating moments of intense atonality (Elektra, Salomé) with passages of lyrical tonality (Der Rosenkavalier). His career spanned turbulent periods of German history; he held official posts during the Nazi era, a fact that provoked controversy about his political stance, while there are also records of his protecting collaborators of Jewish origin. After the war he was officially cleared of party affiliation and returned to public recognition. Strauss’s legacy remains central to the 20th‑century orchestral and operatic repertoire, both for the quality of his scores and for their influence on the development of symphonic and dramatic language.
