Tony Duquette (Anthony Michael Duquette) was an American artist and decorator known for his lavish set designs, costumes, and interiors for theatre, film, and private clients. Trained at the Chouinard Art Institute with further study at the Yale School of the Theatre, he rose to prominence in Hollywood through work on MGM productions and collaborations with prominent directors and producers, as well as projects for ballet and opera companies. His work ranged from award‑winning Broadway costumes — for which he won the Tony Award for Best Costume Design for Camelot — to interiors for high‑profile clients such as J. Paul Getty, Doris Duke, and Elizabeth Arden, and to public spaces including hotels and cultural centers. Duquette also mounted solo exhibitions at major museums, becoming the first American artist to have a solo show at the Louvre. Over his career he created large environmental installations, notably the celebration Our Lady Queen of the Angels, which was presented for years in Los Angeles and featured multisensory approaches and religious and ethnic iconography. With his wife Elizabeth he founded an institution dedicated to promoting and preserving his work, leaving a legacy at the intersection of scenic design, interior decoration, and environmental art.
