Wilhelm Richard Wagner was a German conductor, composer, theatre director and essayist, first known for his operas (or "music dramas", as he later called them). Wagner's compositions, particularly those from his late period, are notable for their complex textures, rich harmonies and orchestration, and the elaborate use of the leitmotif: musical themes associated with individual characters, places, ideas or other elements. Because he disliked most other composers' operas, Wagner wrote the music and the libretto for all his works.
Wagner was a pioneer in advances in musical language, such as extreme chromaticism and the rapid shifting of tonal centers, which greatly influenced the development of European art music. His opera Tristan und Isolde is sometimes described as a landmark in the beginnings of modern music. Wagner's influence extends beyond music; it is also felt in philosophy, literature, the visual arts and theatre.
