Rick Danko was a Canadian musician best known as a bassist, singer, and songwriter — one of the founding members of The Band, with whom he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1994. Born into a musical family of Ukrainian descent, Danko was noted for his naturally mournful voice and for bass lines that blended elements of country, blues, and R&B, playing a decisive role in shaping the group’s sound. In the 1960s he joined the Hawks, backing Ronnie Hawkins and later Bob Dylan; he took part in the Big Pink sessions that produced the repertoire known as The Basement Tapes. With The Band he released landmark records such as Music from Big Pink and the self-titled album, on which he wrote and sang songs that became group classics. After the end of The Band’s first era in 1976, Danko recorded a solo album in 1977 featuring contributions from artists including Ringo Starr and Eric Clapton, and remained musically active in various projects, including the reformation of The Band beginning in 1983. His legacy endures in the influence his bass lines and vocal timbre have had on generations of rock and roots musicians.
