Laurent Sourisseau, known by the pen name Riss, is a French cartoonist and comic-book author, noted for his long association with the weekly Charlie Hebdo, where he has worked since the early 1990s. A former railway worker who left operational duties to devote himself to press cartooning, he joined teams of well-known contributors and took part in the paper’s 1992 relaunch, becoming deputy editor-in-chief in 2009 and, after the 2015 attack, editor-in-chief and majority shareholder.
His work combines political cartoons and graphic reportage: he covered, for example, the trial of Maurice Papon, producing hundreds of courtroom drawings that were publicly exhibited. He has published books and collections related to political satire and social criticism, and collaborated on editorial projects about presidential campaigns and contemporary issues.
Riss has also been involved in public controversies: some of his covers and editorials drew criticism for an alleged anti-Muslim bias and for representations judged offensive by associations and the press. These disputes are part of his public record, which blends significant influence in French satirical journalism with intense debates over freedom of expression and the limits of caricature.
