Robert B. Weide is an American filmmaker known for documentaries about figures in comedy and for his work in television comedy. He first became known with The Marx Brothers in a Nutshell (1982), a widely viewed PBS documentary that revealed his affinity for biographical studies of comedians. Over his career he directed and produced films about Mort Sahl, Lenny Bruce, and Woody Allen, among others, combining historical research with archival material.
His documentary on Lenny Bruce, narrated by Robert De Niro, earned him an Academy Award nomination for Best Documentary in 1999; he has also received Emmy Awards for works such as W.C. Fields: Head Up, Lenny Bruce: Swear to Tell the Truth, and for directing on Curb Your Enthusiasm. From 2000 to 2005 he served as the principal director and executive producer on Larry David’s HBO series, a role in which he shaped the show’s tone and comedic format.
In 2008 he made his first feature fiction film, How to Lose Friends & Alienate People, and has continued to alternate between documentary and cinema. Recent works, such as his documentary on Kurt Vonnegut, examine both artistic careers and creative processes, reinforcing his reputation as an author attentive to the history of comedy and to the construction of cultural memory.
