Robert Cummings was an American film and television actor whose career ranged from light comedies of the 1930s and 1940s to notable dramatic roles and hit TV series. He first became known on screen in 1939 with Three Smart Girls Grow Up and appeared in films such as The Devil and Miss Jones (1941) and The Bride Wore Boots (1946). His dramatic work also drew attention in Kings Row (1942) and, especially, in two Alfred Hitchcock films: Saboteur (1942) and Dial M for Murder (1954). A graduate of the American Academy of Dramatic Arts after interrupting studies in aeronautical engineering, Cummings served in the Armed Forces during World War II as a flight instructor. He acted in dramatic radio series and, on television, won an Emmy for his appearance in Twelve Angry Men; between 1955 and 1959 he starred in The Bob Cummings Show, one of his biggest TV successes. Beyond his acting career, he published the book Stay Young and Vital in 1960, on diet and exercise. His career was notable for its versatility across genres, for moving from classic cinema into the new era of television, and for the sustained public recognition he enjoyed from the 1940s through the 1960s.
