Rudolph Minkowski was a German‑American astronomer whose work shaped observational astronomy in the 20th century. He worked extensively on supernovae and, together with Walter Baade, helped distinguish two fundamental spectral classes — now called Type I and Type II — a milestone for understanding stellar evolution and thermonuclear explosions. Minkowski also became known for identifying optical counterparts of radio sources and for leading the Palomar Observatory Sky Survey, a photographic atlas that mapped much of the northern sky and provided the basis for numerous subsequent studies. In 1951 he co‑discovered, with Albert G. Wilson, the near‑Earth asteroid 1620 Geographos. Among his other legacies are a catalogue of nearly 200 planetary nebulae (including the well‑known Minkowski 2‑9), the identification of an enigmatic dwarf object associated with NGC 541 known as “Minkowski’s object,” and the discovery of a correlation between the luminosity of early‑type galaxies and their velocity dispersion — a relation that influenced later work such as that of Faber and Jackson. His career earned significant honors, including the Bruce Medal, and his name was immortalized on a lunar crater shared with his uncle Hermann Minkowski.
