Roger Auque was a French journalist and diplomat whose career spanned major newsrooms, conflict zones and intelligence services. As a correspondent and grand reporter he worked for outlets such as RTL, La Croix, Paris Match and Le Figaro Magazine, covering wars in Lebanon, Iraq and other troubled regions. His field experience included a 1987 kidnapping in Beirut, when he spent about a year as a hostage—an episode that shaped both his professional and personal life.

Over the course of his career, Auque also provided services to intelligence agencies, as he recounted in posthumous memoirs, and took part in operations he described as paid by foreign secret services. In 2009 he was appointed France’s ambassador to Eritrea, a post he held until 2012. While in Asmara he was diagnosed with a brain tumor, which prompted his return to France.

Auque’s public life combined frontline journalism, diplomatic work and controversies, including criticism of his professional practices and financial matters. The author of memoirs and award‑winning reports, he left a complex legacy within both the press and the diplomatic corps, marked by formal recognition and debates over his ties to the intelligence world.
