Roland Garros was a French aviation pioneer whose career moved from aerial exhibitions to combat during the First World War. Initially known for stunts and records at air meetings and for being the first to cross the Mediterranean basin by plane in 1913, Garros became noted as a demonstration pilot and altitude record holder, building a reputation for technical skill and courage in an era when flying was still extremely dangerous. Graduated from HEC and an entrepreneur in the automobile trade before dedicating himself to aviation, Garros learned to fly largely on his own and joined international exhibition tours, including in the United States and South America. Those experiences honed his navigation and piloting under adverse conditions, increasing his renown and his role in the development of civil and military aircraft. With the outbreak of war, he served as a fighter aviator, making a natural shift from performance pilot to combatant. Killed in action in 1918, his figure remained linked to the early development of aviation and, symbolically, to the tennis tournament that has borne his name since 1928.
