Rowan Douglas Williams, Baron Williams of Oystermouth, is a Welsh Anglican bishop, theologian and poet who served as the 104th Archbishop of Canterbury from 2002 to 2012. Before that he was Bishop of Monmouth and Archbishop of Wales, and he built a distinguished academic career at Cambridge and Oxford, where he taught theology and held the Lady Margaret Professorship at Oxford. Known for his scholarship, he speaks several languages and has published essays and poems with a strong spiritual emphasis. His time in Canterbury was marked by efforts to mediate deep divisions within the Anglican Communion over contemporary issues such as the ordination of women and questions of sexuality. He sought to keep dialogue open between opposing factions, although initiatives he supported — including a proposed Anglican Covenant and reforms to allow women bishops in the Church of England — did not secure the necessary backing. After retiring from Canterbury, Williams was raised to the House of Lords as a life peer and remained active in academia: he delivered the Gifford Lectures, served as Master of Magdalene College, Cambridge, and was Chancellor of the University of South Wales. His work and leadership left a legacy of learned theological reflection and a commitment to reconciling tradition and change within the church.
