Rudolf Diels was a German politician and member of the Nazi Party, known for serving as the first chief of the Gestapo from 1933 to 1934. Born into a rural family, he qualified in law and joined the Prussian police force, where he gained prominence for his role in political repression, earning the protection of Hermann Göring and promotion to command of the then-renamed Department 1A, the Gestapo. As the principal interrogator in the investigation of the Reichstag fire, Diels became a central figure in the consolidation of the Nazi security apparatus, but he also made enemies within the regime, notably Reinhard Heydrich. His refusal to carry out certain orders during the 'Night of the Long Knives' and the subsequent transfer of the Gestapo to SS control led to his dismissal in 1934. He later held administrative posts, including vice president of the Berlin police and regional governor in Cologne, maintaining influence through ties to Göring. After 1945 he testified at the Nuremberg Trials and served in civil roles in Lower Saxony and at the Interior Ministry until retiring in 1953. He died in 1957 in a hunting accident.
