Sandra St. Victor (Sandra Kay Matthews) is an American singer and songwriter, best known as the lead voice of the group The Family Stand and for the international hit "Ghetto Heaven." Trained in music from a young age at arts magnet schools, she worked extensively as a backing singer and session artist in New York, accompanying names such as Roy Ayers, Chaka Khan, Freddie Jackson and Glenn Jones, which established her reputation in the soul/R&B scene. In the late 1980s and 1990s she joined the creative partnership that produced The Family Stand and, as a solo artist, recorded for labels including Elektra and Warner Bros.; the album Mack Diva Saves the World (1996) earned critical praise despite limited commercial support. Several of her compositions were reused by prominent artists — among them Prince, Chaka Khan and Tina Turner — and songs she co-wrote received Grammy nominations when performed by other interpreters. From the 2000s onward she expanded her work in Europe, creating the stage project Daughters of Soul and performing at major international festivals. She continued releasing independent records and collaborating with producers such as Mark De Clive-Lowe and Mark Batson, maintaining a lasting influence as a performer, songwriter and organizer of collective projects in the contemporary soul scene.
