Sandy Denny was an English singer-songwriter who played a central role in the development of British folk rock. Best known as the principal voice of Fairport Convention in the late 1960s, she was instrumental in the rediscovery and reinvention of traditional British material, especially on the recordings that culminated in the influential Liege & Lief. After early work in folk clubs and a spell with the Strawbs, Denny formed Fotheringay and later pursued a solo career, producing notable albums such as The North Star Grassman and the Ravens, Sandy, Like an Old Fashioned Waltz, and Rendezvous. Her songwriting, characterized by introspective lyrics and unconventional harmonies, produced songs that became standards, most notably "Who Knows Where the Time Goes?", which has been widely covered by international artists. She also collaborated with prominent musicians, including a duet with Robert Plant on "The Battle of Evermore" (Led Zeppelin IV), making her the only guest vocalist to appear on a Led Zeppelin album. Despite a brief career, her work has been extensively reassessed and reissued, establishing a lasting influence on folk music and the British musical canon of the late 20th century.
