Scott Walker, born Noel Scott Engel, was a singer, songwriter, and influential figure in postwar popular music. He began as a child actor and singer in the 1950s and achieved commercial success in the 1960s as a member of The Walker Brothers; their singles “The Sun Ain’t Gonna Shine (Anymore)” and “Make It Easy on Yourself” topped the UK charts.
From 1967 onward, Walker established himself as a solo artist with notable albums such as Scott and Scott 4, on which he moved from orchestral ballads toward more experimental directions. His deep voice and pursuit of unusual sonic structures marked him as an avant-garde figure, earning the respect of fellow musicians and critics.
Over the decades his work influenced artists including David Bowie and Sting as well as contemporary bands, and it has been celebrated in the documentary Scott Walker: 30 Century Man and in a BBC tribute at the Royal Albert Hall. In recent years he collaborated on unexpected projects—most notably the album Soused (2014) with Sunn O)))—and contributed to the soundtrack of Vox Lux (2018).
