Sepharial, the pen name of Walter Gorn Old, was an influential English astrologer and occult writer active from the late 19th into the early 20th century. A prominent member of the Theosophical Society, he translated and promoted esoteric ideas, was close to Helena Blavatsky, and helped introduce Theosophy alongside his contemporaries. His education included studies in medicine, psychology and oriental languages, giving him a level of erudition uncommon among astrologers of his generation. As editor of the long-established Old Moore’s Almanac, Sepharial published dozens of works on astrology, numerology, occultism and even financial astrology. Some titles — such as The Kabala of Numbers and his writings on the Black Moon (Lilith) — influenced later authors, including Alan Leo and E. H. Bailey. His contribution to Degrees of the Zodiac Symbolised anticipated developments such as the Sabian Symbols. Despite his learning and influence on esoteric currents, part of his output suffered from weak editing and poor organization, which limited the staying power of his reputation. Still, several of his works remain consulted and are available in reprints and digital archives, preserving his legacy in Western astrology.
