Sid Sheinberg was an American executive and lawyer who became a leading figure at MCA Inc. and Universal Pictures over more than four decades. A Columbia law graduate, he entered the entertainment industry early and rose to executive positions, playing a decisive role in transforming Universal from a secondary studio into a global multimedia conglomerate. Sheinberg is remembered for discovering and supporting Steven Spielberg at the start of his career, backing risky projects that became cinema landmarks such as Jaws, E.T., and Jurassic Park. Films produced under his leadership also achieved critical and commercial recognition, including Schindler’s List and Back to the Future. Beyond film, he led the company’s expansion into the music sector, taking part in strategic acquisitions that helped shape what is now Universal Music Group. His management included major corporate negotiations, notably the sale of MCA in 1990. Active in civic and humanitarian causes, Sheinberg served on the boards of several institutions and received awards for his professional and philanthropic work, leaving a legacy in the entertainment industry and in support of cultural and social projects.
