Silvestre Revueltas was one of Mexico’s most important modernist composers, recognized for his contribution to symphonic music and for combining popular and avant-garde practices. Trained at the National Conservatory in Mexico City and with studies in the United States, he also worked as a violinist and assistant conductor of the National Symphony Orchestra alongside Carlos Chávez, with whom he collaborated to promote contemporary Mexican music. His output includes concert music, chamber works, film scores and songs; among the most cited pieces are Sensemayá — often regarded as his masterpiece — and the score for the film La noche de los mayas, from which a widely circulated arrangement was later derived. Revueltas explored popular rhythms and timbres, incorporating folk elements and a strong rhythmic character into his works. Politically active, he took part in tours associated with the left during the Spanish Civil War. Despite artistic recognition, he faced financial difficulties and personal problems that affected his life and health. His work left a lasting legacy on twentieth-century Mexican music, preserved in performances, recordings and musicological studies.
