Sophia Dorothea of Brunswick-Lüneburg was a princess by marriage and the central figure in one of the most notorious scandals of European nobility at the turn of the 17th–18th centuries. Married in 1682 to George Louis, the future George I of Great Britain, the union was arranged for dynastic and financial reasons and proved deeply unhappy, marked by familial contempt, marital conflict and the rise of George’s mistress, Melusine von der Schulenburg.
Sophia Dorothea is chiefly remembered for her relationship with Count Philip Christoph von Königsmarck, which culminated in the count’s disappearance and death in 1694 and in proceedings that led to the princess’s divorce and imprisonment. Sentenced to confinement at Ahlden Castle, she remained detained for three decades until her death in 1726, under circumstances that spawned legends and ongoing debate about the truth of the adultery accusations.
The episode had lasting political and personal repercussions: Sophia Dorothea’s detention and treatment stained the reputation of the House of Hanover and generated intergenerational grievance, affecting subsequent dynastic relations. Her tragic story inspired literary and cinematic works, keeping alive the memory of a princess ensnared by court intrigue.
