Sulak Sivaraksa is a Thai social activist, scholar and author known for articulating a form of engaged Buddhism oriented toward social justice, democracy and cultural integrity. Founder of the Sathirakoses-Nagapradeepa Foundation and initiator of projects such as the Spirit in Education Movement, he played a leading role in creating interreligious networks and commissions and non-governmental organizations dedicated to sustainable development and interfaith dialogue in Thailand and across Asia. His career combines academic work—he has been a visiting professor at universities including UC Berkeley, Toronto and Cornell—with sustained activism against violence and for human rights, and he has received international awards such as the Right Livelihood Award (1995). Exiled during episodes of political repression, he led campaigns for nonviolence and worked with pacifist movements and international organizations. Author of influential books such as Loyalty Demands Dissent and Seeds of Peace, his writings combine political critique, universal ethics and proposals for social renewal grounded in Buddhist principles. Controversial in some domestic political episodes, Sulak has left a lasting impact on religiously inspired activism and civic engagement in the region.
