Sydney Biddle Barrows is an American businesswoman and writer who became publicly known in the 1980s after being identified as the owner of a high-end escort service in New York that operated from 1979 to 1984. Born into a family with established historical lineages in the United States, she was dubbed the “Mayflower Madam” by the press after the case and its genealogical connections drew attention. After the service closed and she confessed in proceedings for promoting prostitution, Barrows turned the public exposure into a media career: in 1986 she published a widely read autobiography that was adapted for television and starred Candice Bergen. She used that visibility to reposition herself as a management and customer-experience consultant, marketing herself as an expert in client service and commercial strategy. Author of several books on etiquette and sales, Barrows built a second phase of her career as a speaker and consultant from the 1990s onward, and coauthored works on behavior and sales techniques. Her case also inspired television episodes, keeping her presence alive in the cultural imagination around scandal and public reinvention.
