Tara Lipinski is a former American figure skater, known for early achievements and for influencing women’s technique in the sport. At 14 she won the U.S. national championships (1997) and, in the same season, became world champion; in 1998 she won the Olympic gold medal — making her the youngest Olympic and world ladies’ singles champion in history. Her competitive repertoire is noted for introducing and performing the double triple loop–triple loop, a pioneering combination among women.
After retiring from competitive skating in 1998, Lipinski continued to skate in shows until 2002 and later shifted her career to sports media. Since 2014 she has been one of the principal commentators for NBC’s figure skating coverage, working alongside peers from the sport and turning her technical experience into television analysis accessible to the public.
Lipinski’s career is notable both for its technical legacy — popularizing high-level jump combinations — and for the public role she assumed in moving between elite sport and sports broadcasting, maintaining relevance in the culture of international figure skating.
