Theodore John Kaczynski was a trained mathematician and author who became known as the “Unabomber,” responsible for a series of bomb attacks in the United States between 1978 and 1995. A former academic prodigy, he left his university career at the end of the 1960s and lived reclusively in a cabin without modern conveniences, pursuing self-sufficiency and adopting a radically critical stance toward industrial technology. Over nearly two decades his actions killed three people and injured more than twenty, motivated by an eco-anarchist worldview that identified industrialization as a cause of loss of human freedom and dignity. In 1995 he conditioned the end of his campaign on the publication of the manifesto “Industrial Society and Its Future,” in which he set out his critique of technological progress and large-scale organization. The long investigation that led to his capture became one of the FBI’s most costly and protracted cases; his identification became possible after his brother recognized the literary style. Convicted in 1998, he served life imprisonment. His figure continues to provoke debate about political violence, anti-industrial radicalism, and the boundaries between social criticism and terrorism.
