Tom Wolfe (Thomas Kennerly Wolfe Jr.) was an American journalist and author, known for his ironic voice and for experimenting with literary techniques in journalism. He became a central figure of the so-called New Journalism in the 1960s and 1970s, a movement that adopted fictional narrative methods for reporting, broke with conventions of strict impartiality, and shaped a more essayistic approach. His professional career included work for newspapers such as The Washington Post and the New York Herald Tribune, as well as contributions to magazines like Esquire. In 1964, the publication of pieces such as “There Goes (Varoom! Varoom!) That Kandy-Kolored Tangerine-Flake Streamline Baby” and the collection The Kandy-Kolored Tangerine-Flake Streamline Baby cemented his prominence and influenced generations of reporters and essayists. Trained in English and the author of a thesis on American writers, Wolfe was also a cultural critic with an interest in popular aspects of American life. His best-known work, including The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test, blends meticulous reporting with humor and irony, leaving a lasting mark on contemporary narrative journalism.
