Tony Banks (Anthony George Banks) is an English musician and composer, best known as the keyboardist and a founding member of the rock band Genesis. His sonic signature—the extensive use of Hammond organ, Mellotron, ARP synthesizers and piano—was crucial in shaping the band’s progressive sound, notably in instrumental passages and arrangements such as the introductions to “Firth of Fifth” and sections of “The Cinema Show,” “Watcher of the Skies” and “Supper’s Ready.”
Beyond his work with Genesis, Banks maintained a diverse solo career, releasing six albums that range across progressive rock, pop and orchestral forms; he also composed for orchestra after a period of career reappraisal in the late 1990s. On solo records and side projects (Bankstatement, Strictly Inc.) he performed as a multi-instrumentalist and frequently invited vocalists such as Fish, Nik Kershaw and Toyah Willcox.
Acknowledged by critics and the industry, he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of Genesis and has received awards and mentions on specialist lists of keyboardists and progressive music. His legacy is tied both to his compositional and arranging contributions to Genesis’s repertoire and to his influence on the use of keyboards in progressive rock.
