Tyge Ottesen Brahe was a Danish astronomer. He had an observatory called Uranienborg on the island of Ven, in the Öresund, between Denmark and Sweden.

Tycho served King Frederick II of Denmark and later Emperor Rudolf II of the Holy Roman Empire, and was one of the most distinguished representatives of the new science — Renaissance science, which had opened a breach in the solid edifice built by the Middle Ages, based on a synthesis of biblical tradition and Aristotelian science. Continuing the work begun by Copernicus, he was received by Western scholars with some reluctance. He studied the phases of the Moon in detail and compiled extensive data that would later serve Johannes Kepler in discovering a celestial harmony in the motion of the planets, a pattern known as Kepler's laws.

King Frederick II granted Tycho an estate on the island of Ven and the funds to build Uranienborg, the first large observatory in Christian Europe. Later, he worked clandestinely at Stjerneborg, where he realized that his instruments at Uranienborg were not sufficiently stable. His unprecedented research program transformed astronomy into the first modern science and also helped launch the Scientific Revolution.
