Věra Komárková was a Czech botanist and mountaineer of international standing, recognized as a pioneer of women's mountaineering. Trained in botany at Charles University, she began opening routes in the Carpathians and became known for high‑level climbs in Alaska and the Himalaya. In 1978 she joined the historic all‑women expedition to Annapurna, reaching the summit on October 15 alongside Irene Miller and two sirdars, an achievement that increased the visibility of women‑led teams.
Over her career she established new routes and led major expeditions, including an attempt on Dhaulagiri in 1980 and a subsequent ascent of Cho Oyu, for which she was credited as the first woman to reach that summit. At the same time she pursued a scientific career in the United States: she earned a PhD in plant ecology in Boulder, published studies on alpine vegetation and introduced phytosociological methods that were uncommon in North American academia.
Her legacy combines technical advances in women's mountaineering, public advocacy for women's roles in expeditions, and scientific contributions to phytosociology. She returned to Europe in the 1980s and taught in higher education in Leysin, Switzerland, where she died in 2005.
