Vi Redd, born Elvira Louise Redd, was an American alto saxophonist, vocalist, and jazz educator known for her work from the 1950s onward. Raised in a Los Angeles jazz family — her father was a drummer influential on Central Avenue — she established herself in the blues-inflected style and earned a reputation as a respected veteran, sharing stages and sessions with figures such as Count Basie, Dizzy Gillespie, Rahsaan Roland Kirk, and Marian McPartland. She recorded two albums under her own name in the early 1960s, Bird Call (United Artists) and Lady Soul (Atco), assembling prominent musicians with critical supervision from Leonard Feather. She also took part in a 1977 collective recording led by Marian McPartland, highlighting her involvement with groups of women instrumentalists in jazz. Besides her performing career and international tours — including runs at London clubs and engagements in Europe and Japan — Vi Redd devoted herself to music education after returning to Los Angeles. She served on advisory panels, received recognition awards within the jazz community, and left a legacy as a player and teacher who helped promote women’s presence in the genre.
